Murder of Miguel Uribe Turbay: Europe demands justice and highlights the threat of drug trafficking in Colombia

The European Parliament approved in Brussels a resolution condemning the assassination of senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, a crime committed in the midst of a growing wave of political violence in Colombia. The Eurochamber’s statement not only expresses solidarity with the politician’s family, but also warns of a wider climate of intimidation and systematic attacks against politicians, journalists, human rights defenders, and social leaders.

This parliamentary decision once again places Colombia at the center of the international debate on democracy, security, and human rights, in a context marked by escalating violence and the threat of organized crime in the region.

A crime that reflects a deeper crisis

The European Parliament stressed that the murder of Uribe Turbay cannot be seen as an isolated event, but rather as part of a growing pattern of political violence that undermines social cohesion and threatens the country’s democratic stability.

According to the adopted document, MEPs demand a thorough investigation that does not stop at the material perpetrators, but also identifies the instigators, facilitators, and criminal networks behind the attacks. The goal is to dismantle the structural factors enabling the spread of violence and to ensure full justice.

Organized crime and transnational threats

One of the most sensitive points in the resolution refers to border areas with Venezuela, where criminal structures such as the Cartel of the Suns have turned these territories into corridors for drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and money laundering.

The Parliament warns that these operations strengthen insurgent groups such as the ELN and FARC dissidents, which not only compromise Colombian sovereignty but also threaten regional stability. The transnational connection between organized crime, insurgency, and political corruption is viewed as one of the greatest risks for the country’s immediate future.

Political polarization and electoral risk

The Eurochamber also highlighted concerns about the climate of political polarization in Colombia, fueled by inflammatory statements and hate speech that have deepened social confrontation.

European legislators expressed particular concern over the increase in attacks against candidates in 2025, which could jeopardize the 2026 presidential elections. In light of this, they urged the Colombian State to implement strong security measures, reinforce institutional communication, and protect public figures at all levels.

Strengthening peace and human rights

The European Parliament emphasized that the long-term solution requires progress in the peace process and comprehensive protection of human rights. To achieve this, it called for:

Greater UN presence in Colombia, with monitoring and verification missions.

Inclusion of the Gulf Clan, the Second Marquetalia, and the Central General Staff in the EU terrorist organizations list.

Adequate funding for the Ombudsman’s Office, as a key institution for citizen protection.

Sending the resolution to the UN, the OAS, and the Colombian Congress, to increase international pressure and coordinate multilateral actions.

Colombia at a historic crossroads

The resolution of the European Parliament constitutes an international warning that reinforces the urgency of taking action against political violence and the advance of organized crime. The international community, with Europe at the forefront, demands that Colombia not only clarify the recent assassinations but also ensure security and stability to preserve democratic order.

In a country where violence has historically shaped political life, the assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay symbolizes a turning point: either democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the peace process are strengthened, or Colombian democracy risks entering a critical stage of fragility and instability.
