Rafael Correa and Jorge Glas designated as generally ineligible for entry into the United States

The Department of State is designating Rafael Vicente Correa Delgado (“Correa”) and Jorge David Glas Espinel (“Glas”) as generally ineligible for entry into the United States due to their involvement in significant corruption during their time in public office.

Correa and Glas abused their positions as former president of Ecuador and former vice president of Ecuador, respectively, by accepting bribes, including through political contributions, in exchange for granting favorable government contracts.

The United States stands with Ecuadorians, including members of civil society, law enforcement, and investigative journalists, committed to increasing government transparency and holding corrupt public officials accountable. Anti-corruption provisions, including in government procurement contracts, help ensure the government delivers for its citizens. This designation also reaffirms our commitment to counter global corruption, including at the highest levels of government.

These public designations by the Department of State are made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024. The Department is also designating Correa’s spouse, Anne Malherbe Gosselin, his adult daughters, Sofia Correa and Anne Dominique Correa, and his adult son, Rafael Miguel Correa, as generally ineligible for entry into the United States. The Department is also designating Glas’ spouse, Cinthia Diaz Aveiga, and his adult son, Jorge Glas Diaz, as generally ineligible for entry into the United States.
