The victim, Paul Stanley Schmidt, was attacked by the suspect, Inderdeep Singh Gosal, who was later charged with second-degree murder. The motive for the killing is unknown, and police are requesting witnesses to come forward. The incident occurred at the corner of Granville and West Pender streets in Vancouver, around 5:40 p.m., after a brief altercation.
According to court documents, this is the suspect’s first and only criminal charge. The victim’s mother, Kathy, stated that "Paul lived for his wife and his daughter … that was his whole life," and that the suspect "has ruined so many lives." A witness described the incident as unusual for Vancouver, stating that the Starbucks was filled with screams after the suspect returned to the store following the stabbing. Police spokesman Sergeant Steve Addison stated that there is significant evidence to indicate what happened but that the motive for the crime is unclear. Authorities are now attempting to piece together the events leading up to the incident and are seeking witnesses to assist them in understanding what happened.
