Gustavo Petro Defends Cuba Against Trump’s Threats

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has once again positioned himself as one of the main defenders of the Cuban government following Donald Trump’s strong statements. However, his intervention has drawn criticism for prioritizing selective achievements while overlooking the broader context of Cuba’s current reality.

Petro Responds to Trump and Highlights Cuba’s “Achievements”

On Tuesday, May 5, during the inauguration of the new building of the Faculty of Arts at the National University of Colombia, Petro dedicated part of his speech to rejecting the U.S. president’s threats against Cuba. According to the Colombian leader, the island deserves to be “helped, not bombed,” mainly because it developed its own COVID-19 vaccine.

“If there is a cultural and artistic vanguard in Latin America, it is called Cuba,” Petro stated, adding that Cuba was “the only society in Latin America and the Caribbean capable of developing a vaccine” during the pandemic.

Although these recognitions have some factual basis, analysts point out that the president downplays serious structural problems on the island, such as chronic medicine shortages, the deep economic crisis, and the real limitations of the Cuban healthcare system beyond the official narrative.

Petro’s Scientific and Cultural Praise for Cuba

Petro insisted that “the facts are the facts” and argued that a society capable of creating a vaccine during a global crisis should receive international applause rather than military threats. This argument, while aiming to highlight Cuban resilience, has been questioned because the development of the Abdala and Soberana vaccines occurred under strong state control and with resources concentrated at the expense of other basic needs of the population.

In the cultural sphere, the Colombian president praised Cuba’s “artistic vanguard.” While the talent of Cuban artists and intellectuals is undeniable, numerous international observers have documented censorship, persecution of cultural dissidents, and restrictions on freedom of expression on the island — elements that Petro notably omitted.

Trump’s Statements That Sparked the Dispute

On Friday, May 1, during a private dinner at the Forum Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump declared that the United States would take control of Cuba “almost immediately” after resolving the conflict with Iran. He mentioned deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and symbolically approaching the Cuban coast.

These provocative and interventionist remarks were quickly rejected by Petro, who on May 2 posted on X: “It is the Cuban men and women who are the sole owners of their country,” and defended the idea that the Americas should be “a continent of freedom and not of invasions.”

Criticism of Petro’s Stance: Idealism or Ideological Alignment?

While defending sovereignty is a valid principle under international law, Petro’s position has faced several objections:

- Selectivity: The Colombian president highlights specific Cuban achievements while remaining silent on consistent reports from human rights organizations regarding repression, arbitrary detentions, and the lack of political freedoms on the island.
- Downplaying Cuba’s Crisis: By focusing solely on the vaccine and culture, Petro avoids addressing the severe migratory crisis, constant blackouts, inflation, and popular discontent that have driven thousands of Cubans to flee the country.
- Diplomatic Risk: Some analysts believe that openly aligning with Miguel Díaz-Canel’s government could complicate Colombia’s relations with the United States, its main trading partner and key actor in regional security.

Petro appears to apply a romanticized view of the Cuban Revolution that contrasts with the current reality of a system that, after more than six decades, struggles to meet the basic needs of its population.

Miguel Díaz-Canel Thanks Petro for His Support

The Cuban president publicly thanked Petro and adopted his words in defense of the “Zone of Peace” in the region. Díaz-Canel recalled José Martí’s legacy and warned that an attack on Cuba would be an attack on all of Latin America.

This mutual support reinforces the ideological closeness between both governments, but it also fuels the perception that Petro uses foreign policy to consolidate support among left-wing sectors across the continent.

Regional Implications and the Pending Debate

The exchange between Petro and Trump revives historical tensions between interventionism and sovereignty in Latin America. While it is legitimate to reject any military invasion, it is also necessary to conduct a balanced analysis that does not ignore the internal failures of the regimes being defended.

Weak Points in Petro’s Argument:
- Emphasizes past or isolated achievements without contextualizing their human and economic cost.
- Ignores the role of internal management in Cuba’s current problems.
- Adopts a confrontational tone that polarizes rather than seeks pragmatic solutions.

At a time when many countries in the region are seeking to attract investment and improve social indicators, the unconditional defense of models that have shown structural limitations raises doubts about the future vision promoted by the Colombian president.
