They release «El Español», operator of Pedro Castillo in an alleged spy network

Jorge Hernández Fernández, a Spanish citizen accused of being a member of an alleged espionage network during the government of former President Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), was arrested by the National Police (PNP) on March 7th. He was later released on Monday by a court order, 13 days after his detention. He was investigated for alleged crimes of organized crime and corruption of officials.

According to sources from the prosecutor’s office, Hernández had planned to use resources to buy technology that would allow for counterintelligence activities against government opponents and those investigating corruption in power. Former Interior Minister Rubén Vargas stated that Hernández had also attempted to attack the Nation’s Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, prosecutor Marita Barreto, coordinator of the Special Team against Corruption, and PNP Colonel Harvey Colchado.

It is believed that Hernández cooperated with the authorities and provided information, which resulted in his release under restrictions. The situation further complicates the situation for Castillo, who is already in preventive detention in the Barbadillo prison for the failed coup attempt announced on December 7th.
